German 158: Introduction to Study of German Literature and Culture: Siren, Witch, Femme Fatale

Instructor: Private: Renata Fuchs

This course examines discourses of alterity from the late middle ages through the early Postmodernity with respect to gender as well as with respect to esoteric Others, such as demons, monsters, witches. The thematic approach allows the course to survey important works of German literature. Our texts engage with reason and madness, love and sexuality, justice and guilt, community and identity. To better understand the cultural contexts in which these texts were produced, we will rely on visual art, history, and philosophy. We will conduct our readings, discussions, and presentations in German.
