SUMMARY:"Raising the Bar: The French chef\, Housewives\, and 'Real Cooks'"
DESCRIPTION:In its 2005 Super Bowl commercial\, McDonald’s presented the Quarter Pounder with Cheese as an “hors d’oeuvre\,” a tongue-in-cheek appropriation of French exquisiteness in food culture. It built on the democratization of gourmet cuisine in the U.S.\, which had its breakthrough more than forty years earlier in a cooking show on a local public television station in Boston. The French Chef and its host and creator\, Julia Child\, had sought to elevate food culture by appealing to an interest in participating in the distinguished esteem of French food. To raise awareness of technique and ingredients\, Child invested even more in an engaging and encouraging pedagogy that became famous for its humor and entertainment\, attracting a huge crowd of viewers with or without an interest in cooking. Child’s elevation of home cooking standards was criticized in feminist discussions as an additional burden on housewives. At the same time\, The French Chef brought new attention to home cooking\, presented the kitchen as a place of serious work\, and finally opened up access to professional cooking to women who had rarely been admitted to culinary academies before. \nThis talk will consider the roles of feminist critique\, unacknowledged labor\, transnational exchange\, and media technology in The French Chef\, illustrating that the success of The French Chef was due in no small part to the conceptual and technical innovations of its media production which supported Child’s communicative and performative talents. Acting as a bar\, the kitchen counter supported Child’s engaging style of addressing the audience not only collectively but also individually. Equipped with an invisible mirror that improved audience participation\, the kitchen counter became part of the new cooking show apparatus.

SUMMARY:Arendt's Solidarity: Anti-Semitism and Racism in the Atlantic World
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 13\, 2025\n4:00 PM – 6:00 PM\nBunche Hall\, Rm 10383 \nRegister here \n  \nThe Center for European and Russian Studies and Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies invite you to a book talk for Arendt’s Solidarity: Anti-Semitism and Racism in the Atlantic World (Stanford University Press 2024). Author David D. Kim\, Professor in the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies and Associate Vice Provost of the International Institute\, will discuss his new publication in conversation with Samuel Moyn (Yale)\, Yogita Goyal (UCLA) and moderator Laurie Hart (UCLA). This event will take place in Bunche Hall\, Room 10383 on May 13\, 2025 at 4PM PST. Registration is required. \nAbout the Talk\nHannah Arendt’s work inspires many to stand in solidarity against authoritarianism\, racial or gender-based violence\, climate change\, and right-wing populism. But what if a careful analysis of her oeuvre reveals a darker side to this intellectual legacy? What if solidarity\, as she conceives of it\, is not oriented toward equality\, freedom\, or justice for all\, but creates a barrier to intersectional coalition building? \nIn Arendt’s Solidarity\, David D. Kim illuminates Arendt’s lifelong struggle with this deceptively straightforward yet divisive concept. Drawing upon her publications\, unpublished documents\, private letters\, radio and television interviews\, newspaper clippings\, and archival marginalia\, Kim examines how Arendt refutes solidarity as an effective political force against anti-Semitism\, racial injustice\, or social inequality. As Kim reveals\, this conceptual conundrum follows the arc of Arendt’s forced migration across the Atlantic and is directly related to every major concern of hers: Christian neighborly love\, friendship\, Jewish assimilation\, Zionism\, National Socialism\, the American republic\, Black Power\, revolution\, violence\, and the human world. Kim places these thoughts in dialogue with dissenting voices\, such as Thomas Mann\, Gershom Scholem\, Jean-Paul Sartre\, James Baldwin\, Frantz Fanon\, James Forman\, and Ralph Ellison. The result is a full-scale reinterpretation of Arendt’s oeuvre. \nAbout the Speakers\nDavid D. Kim is Professor in the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies and Associate Vice Provost of the International Institute at the University of California\, Los Angeles. He is the author of Cosmopolitan Parables: Trauma and Responsibility in Contemporary Germany (2017). \nSamuel Moyn is the Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale University\, where he also serves as head of Grace Hopper College. Trained in modern European intellectual history\, he works on political and legal thought in modern times and on constitutional and international law in historical and current perspective. His most recent book is Liberalism against Itself: Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Times (Yale University Press\, 2023)\, based on the Carlyle Lectures in the History of Political Thought at the University of Oxford. \nYogita Goyal is Professor of African American Studies and English at UCLA and the author of two monographs: Romance\, Diaspora\, and Black Atlantic Literature (2010) and Runaway Genres: The Global Afterlives of Slavery (2019)\, winner of the René Wellek Prize from ACLA\, the Perkins prize from the International Society for the Study of Narrative and Honorable Mention for the James Russell Lowell Prize from MLA.  \nLaurie Hart is Professor and Department Chair of Anthropology and Co-Director of the Center for European and Russian Studies at UCLA.

SUMMARY:Renaissance Refugees: Negotiating Displacement in the Early Modern Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 5\, 2025 \n3:00 PM | Royce Hall 23 \nAbout the Lecture\nDuring the early modern period\, campaigns of ethnic cleansing forced entire populations to flee\, creating diasporic networks across the Mediterranean and beyond. Ferdinand of Aragon’s “pious cruelty” as Machiavelli famously put it in the Prince\, set an example that was repeatedly imitated by European rulers to consolidate sovereignty and enforce religious uniformity. How did refugees cope with mass expulsions? Far from being voiceless victims\, they wrote eloquently about displacement in dozens of texts\, contributing to the creation of ‘refugee literature.’ As this talk argues\, writing provided refugees not only with a new home that filled the void of their lost homeland but also with a forum through which asylum policies were negotiated \nAbout the Presenter\nDiego Pirillo is the UCLA 2025 Charles Speroni Endowed Chair in Medieval Renaissance Literature and Culture. He is a Professor and Chair of Italian Studies at UC Berkeley\, where he also serves as the Director of the Renaissance and Early Modern Studies (REMS) graduate program and as an Affiliate Faculty member in the History department. His work explores how mobility\, displacement\, and colonialism shaped the intellectual and cultural life of early modern Europe and the Atlantic world. His forthcoming book\, The Atlantic Republic of Letters: Knowledge and Colonialism in the Age of Franklin (University of Pennsylvania Press)\, examines the intellectual history of colonialism in early America\, showing how Enlightenment scholars served as agents of empire\, silencing their ties to chattel slavery and coordinating the dispossession of Indigenous people. \n

SUMMARY:UCLA/Digital Humanities Distinguished Annual Lecture: T.J Demos
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Prof. T.J. Demos\, an award-winning writer whose work focuses on the intersection of contemporary art\, global politics\, and ecology\, will be asking the question: when the violent repression of community activism at the nexus of abolition\, decolonization\, and environmentalism is compounded by forces of contemporary counterinsurgency that are operating to prevent any political transformation beyond the status quo\, how might a prehensive climate-justice-directed art history\, and an insurgent arts of the possible\, meaningfully respond? Books include The Migrant Image Art and Politics of Documentary During the Global Crisis (2013)\, Decolonizing Nature Contemporary Art and the Politics of Ecology (2016)\, Against the Anthropocene: Visual Culture and Environment Today (2017)\, Beyond the World’s End: Arts of living at the Crossing (2020) and Radical Futurisms Ecologies of Collapse\, Chronopolitics\, and Justice-to-Come (2023).
