SUMMARY:Dante’s Plurilingualism and the Complexity of Literature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful lecture on Dante’s linguistic journey\, presented by Manuele Gragnolati\, Professor of Italian Literature at Sorbonne Université. Dante grappled with the tension between the natural appeal of the vernacular and the esteemed status of Latin\, often holding seemingly contradictory views. This event will delve into his transition from the quest for an “illustrious vernacular” to the innovative plurilingualism of the Commedia. Gragnolati will explore how Dante’s poetic language blends various registers\, challenging notions of closure\, linearity\, and hierarchy\, thereby embodying plurality\, paradox\, and complexity. The lecture will take place on May 22\, 2024\, from 12 PM to 2 PM at the Charles E. Young Research Library\, Room 11348. RSVP to secure your spot.

SUMMARY:"Neither Chicken nor Egg: In the Beginning There Was an Omelette" Film Screening with Verena Mund
DESCRIPTION:This is where the cookbook differs from the cooking show. In Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961)\, the omelette is not mentioned until chapter three. But this egg recipe is right in the middle of the three pilots of Julia Child’s cooking show The French Chef (1962-1973). The recipe is cheap\, full of basic techniques\, and not too hard to learn to be a lot of fun. David Goldfarb’s TV show Julia from 2022 also relies on an omelette to tell the story of the pivotal moment when Child first appeared with eggs and a pan on television. \nAs background for the lunch talk “Raising the Bar: The French Chef\, Housewives\, and ‘Real Cooks’” on October 10\, the shows The French Omelette (episode 4 of season 1 of The French Chef\, 1963\, WGBH) and Omelette (episode 1 of season 1 of Julia\, 2022\, HBO Max) will be screened and contextualized to help better understand the roles of feminist critique\, unacknowledged labor\, transnational exchange\, and media technology in the history of this show.

SUMMARY:Californie 1900: Lecture by 2023 TMH Fellow Carolin Görgen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture by Carolin Görgen\, Associate Professor of American Studies at Sorbonne Université\, Paris & 2023 Thomas Mann Fellow \nWhen the Paris world’s fair opened to the public in the spring of 1900\, California was the only U.S. state to have its own pavilion. This talk explores the photo album Californie 1900\, a photographic souvenir album assembled expressly for the fair. The album’s elaborate image sequence\, accompanied by translations into French and German\, transported a victorious narrative of conquest over the western American environment to European publics. At the same time\, the myriad photographic illustrations also helped fashion California’s self-image in a period of growing nationalism – as the contributing photographers themselves concluded that “it is only through photography that the beauties of this state can be displayed to the East and to the rest of the world.” Looking at the album’s circulation from San Francisco to Paris and back\, this talk aims to reconstruct how photographs shaped a dominant visual understanding of the American West.

SUMMARY:Archive Asylum: Archiving and Researching Endangered Literatures
DESCRIPTION:War and flight endanger the literature of affected countries. Authors struggle to survive. They are unable to write. They lose their libraries\, manuscripts\, pictures and other valuable objects. In response to these political and social challenges\, how can we build up an archive for asylum and offer these literatures the place they serve in research? How can an asylum archive preserve threatened memory? In this public lecture\, Professor Sandra Richter will draw upon her directorship at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach to address these urgent questions for the twenty–first century. \nRSVP required.

SUMMARY:Alice Hasters "Black Germans between Erasure and Tokenism"
DESCRIPTION:Journalist and author Alice Hasters is a major contemporary Black German voice. Her bestselling 2019 book Was weiße Menschen nicht über Rassismus hören wollen\, aber wissen sollten (What White People Don’t Want to Hear About Racism\, But Should Know Anyway) led to animated public debates about race and racism in Germany. In her lecture\, Hasters will address the central assumption that frames Black German life today: the perception that Black people are “new” to Germany. This assumption erases the fact that Black people have lived in German–speaking lands for hundreds of years. As she shows\, it also allows anti–Black racism and its history to be falsely viewed as only an American or Western problem with no relation to the German context. Examining the dynamics that unfold from this skewed understanding\, Hasters argues that attending to the history of anti–Black racism in Germany enables a deeper understanding of German identity\, racism\, and antisemitism today. \nRoyce Hall 236 \nRSVP Required

SUMMARY:"The Clinic of Silence" with Catherine Perret
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Perret is a French scholar\, philosopher\, art critic\, psychoanalyst\, and author. Please join us for Catherine Perret’s lecture on Fernand Deligny\, an educator and activist who invented a radically new approach to autism.  \n \nJoin Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://ucla.zoom.us/j/92946036075\nMeeting ID: 929 4603 6075 \nFrom the thirties to the sixties\, Fernand Deligny became famous in France as a libertarian educator. Then\, until the nineties\, he exiled himself with some friends and a few autistic children to Southern France. There he developed memorization\, recording\, and archiving practices (writings\, movies\, maps) opening the possibilities for speaking and non-speaking individuals in the community. His anthropological experimentations\, inspired by Marcel Mauss and André Leroi-Gourhan\, focused on a new concept: the “common body\,” that had\, after reading Keith Basso and Tim Ingold\, an astonishing political impact. Catherine Perret will analyze how this concept can be read in regard to the sociological concept of the “social body” and how its invention proceeds directly from Fernand Deligny’s “artistic” inventions.
