
Elyse Brusher
Ph.D. Candidate
Elyse Brusher is a Ph.D. Candidate in French & Francophone Studies in the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies and 2022 recipient of the Josephine DeKarman Fellowship. Her dissertation, entitled “Sentimentalism and Transgression: Disability in Nineteenth-Century French Women’s Novels (1815-1890)” explores the representation of physical and mental disability in nineteenth-century novels written by French women. She has conducted archival research at the Biblioth que Nationale de France, for which she received a Lenart Travel Fellowship and a Center for European and Russian Studies Pre-Dissertation Travel Fellowship at UCLA.
When she is not teaching or researching, or working on campus, Elyse spends her time working in development & fundraising and translation services at Freedom House Detroit, a non-profit organization located in her home state of Michigan that serves individuals seeking humanitarian protection.
