On Wednesday, October 2, the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies hosted a Career Insights Session featuring European Union delegates Ryan Meilak and Walter Goetz, moderated by Dr. Nina Bjekovic. Meilak, head of outreach and congressional liaison for the European Parliament in Washington, D.C., and Goetz, former Head of Cabinet for Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean, shared their expertise and experiences, providing students with valuable insights into career opportunities within the EU, international diplomacy, and public service.
During the session, Meilak and Goetz discussed impactful EU projects that promote cultural exchange and understanding, underscoring the importance of multilingualism and the study of European languages in fostering effective communication and collaboration among nations. They highlighted various career paths available within EU institutions in both Europe and the United States, as well as the qualifications typically required. The delegates also emphasized the networking opportunities available through the EU to young professionals and students interested in European affairs. Additionally, Meilak and Goetz addressed the EU’s support for youth entrepreneurship in Europe and examined the opportunities and challenges associated with working in EU institutions.
