Being enrolled in German courses at UCLA allowed me to rediscover my love for the language, culture and country that I left behind when I moved to New York from Frankfurt ten years ago. My first upper division German course was challenging to say the least, as it made me realize how much of the language I had lost within a decade of moving out of the country I had called home for so long. However, within a quarter, I felt more comfortable conversing in German again and decided I would pursue a minor in German. A year later, I found myself studying abroad in Berlin, the beautiful, exciting and dynamic German capital. While reconnecting with my childhood friends and revisiting old memories, I was also able to fulfill numerous requirements for my minor. Without the wonderful help of the German department, I would not have been able to immerse myself in a long sought-after reunion with my roots.
