B.A. in ELTS with Scandinavian

Learning Outcomes 
The European Languages and Transcultural Studies with Scandinavian major has the following learning outcomes:  

  1. Demonstrated advanced proficiency in a Scandinavian language.  
  2. Demonstrated proficiency on one of the areas of the experimental humanities (digital, environmental, medical, and urban).  
  3. Demonstrated deep understanding of European culture and history, including in a global context, with a particular expertise in a Scandinavian region. 
  4. Ability to interrogate, analyze, and discuss literary and filmic production. 
  5. Evidence of strong oral and writing skills. 

Preparation for the Major 
Required: Scandinavian 6, or equivalent. One European Literature, Language, Culture or Film and Media course selected from: French 12, 14, 14W, 16, 41, 60, or Italian 42A, 42B, 42C, 46, 50A, 50B, 77, or German 50B, 56, 59, or Scandinavian 40, 40W, 50, 50W, 60W. 

One Experimental Humanities (Digital, Environmental, Medical and Urban) course selected from: Digital: Comparative Literature 1E, Digital Humanities 30, Environmental: English M30, Medical: Ancient Near East 14W, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology 17, History 3D, Honors Collegium 1 and 26, Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology 60, Study of Religion 55 Urban: German 61A

Transfer Students
Transfer applicants to the European Language and Transcultural Studies with 90 or more units must complete the following introductory courses prior to admission to UCLA: completion of intermediate level of French or German or Italian or Swedish or Danish or Dutch or Norwegian or Finnish or Yiddish and any course on European Literature, Culture, Film or Media.

The Major
Required: One course selected from three of the following four areas (total of three courses) 

  • European Literature: French 115-121, 136, 163, 164, 166, or German 110, 112, 158, 170, 173 174, or Italian 103A, 103B, 110, 113, 114B, 120, 140, 150 or Scandinavian, C133A, 134, C141A, 141C, 143A, 143C, C145A, C145B, C146A, 147A, 147C, 154, 155, 156, 157, 172A, C180, C185.
  • European Culture: French 112, 121, 130, 137, 138, 139, 160, 167, 169, or German 102, 109, 113-117, 118SL, 154, 155, 159, 175, or Italian 102A-C, 116A-B, 122-125, 152, M158, or Scandinavian C131, 133C, 134, C137, 138, 142A, C147B, C171, 172A, 173A, C174A, 174B.  
  • European Film and Media: French 141, 142, or German 103, 104, 157 or Italian 121, or Scandinavian 161-167  
  • Experimental Humanities: CESC 100XP, CESC 172XP, Comparative Literature 180, 180SL, Classics 148, Digital Humanities 101-151, ELTS C101XP, English M118E, M118F, Food ST M176XP, Italian 124, and Public Affairs M176XP.  

Required Elective Courses: 4 courses selected from Scandinavian C131-C185 and any 2 courses selected from ELTS 100-180 and 191, French 100-169, or German 104-175, or Italian 102A-M158, or Scandinavian C131-C185. 

During their senior year, students must also take European Language and Transcultural Studies 187 in which they complete a capstone senior thesis. 

Student may apply no more than 2 courses or 8 units from other departments. Approval for outside courses must be petitioned with the undergraduate adviser of the department. Students may apply no more than 4 units of European Languages and Transcultural Studies 197, 195 and 199 as a substitution for one elective course. Each major course must be taken for a letter grade, and students must have an overall grade-point average of 2.0 or better. 

Students who are interested in Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish language instruction may enroll in these courses at other UC campuses through distance learning, and may petition to apply these courses to the major requirements.
