Kalani Michell, Assistant Professor of European Languages and Transcultural Studies, has been selected as a recipient of the 2022-23 UCLA Society of Hellman Fellows award. The UCLA Society of Hellman Fellows provides support and encouragement for the research of promising Assistant Professors who show capacity for great distinction in their research in the UCLA College of Letters and Science and the Professional Schools. The fellowship supports research and creative activities that promote career advancement and enhance the individual’s progress toward tenure. The Fellowship comes with a monetary award and recognition as part the Society.
During her tenure as a Hellman Fellow, Dr. Michell will work on her monograph, All in the Same Box: Unhinging Audiovisual Media in the 1960s and 1970s, which explores the transnational expansion of art, film, and other medial objects outside of conventional exhibition contexts, such as the gallery and the cinema, during this time. Hellman funding will allow her to complete archival research in Germany for chapters on artist Joseph Beuys and filmmaker Hellmuth Costard.
